Lyrics

Grim-faced and forbidding,
Their faces closed tight,
An angular mass of New Yorkers
Pacing in rhythm,
Race the oncoming night,
They chase through the streets of Manhattan.
Headfirst humanity,
Pause at a light,
Then flow through the streets of the city.

They seem oblivious
To a soft spring rain,
Like an English rain
So light, yet endless
From a leaden sky.

The buildings are lost in the limitless rise.
My feet catch the pulse and the purposeful stride.

I feel the sense of possibilities,
I feel the wrench of hard realities.
The focus is sharp in the city.

Wide-angle watcher
On life’s ancient tales,
Steeped in the history of London.

Mist in the streets of Westminster.
Wistful and weathered,
The pride still prevails,
Alive in the streets of the city.

Are they oblivious
To this quality?
A quality
Of light unique to
Every city’s streets.

Pavements may teem with intense energy,
But the city is calm in this violent sea.

Lyrics

Love spreads her arms, waits there for the nails
I forgive you, boy, I will prevail
Too much to take, come cross to bear
I’m hiding in the trees with a picnic, she’s over there, yeah

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

She didn’t scream, she didn’t make a sound
I forgive you boy, but don’t leave town
Cold black skin, naked in the rain
Hammer flash in the lightning, they’re hurting her again

Let me put you in the picture, let me show you what I mean
The messiah is my sister, ain’t no king man, she’s my queen

I have a dream, I’ve seen the light
Don’t put it out, say she’s alright, yeah, she’s my sister

She didn’t scream, she didn’t make a sound
I forgive you boy, but don’t leave town
Cold black skin, naked in the rain
Hammer flash in the lightning, they’re hurting her again
Oh, oh, ooh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Let me put you in the picture, let me show you what I mean
The messiah is my sister, ain’t no king man, she’s my queen

I have a dream, I’ve seen the light
Don’t put it out, say she’s alright, yeah, she’s my sister

Lyrics

A modern-day warrior
Mean mean stride,
Today’s Tom Sawyer
Mean mean pride.

Though his mind is not for rent,
Don’t put him down as arrogant.
His reserve, a quiet defense,
Riding out the day’s events.
The river

And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society.
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift.

The world is, the world is,
Love and life are deep,
Maybe as his eyes are wide.

Today’s Tom Sawyer,
He gets high on you,
And the space he invades
He gets by on you.

No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government.
Always hopeful, yet discontent,
He knows changes aren’t permanent,
But change is.

And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society.
Catch the witness, catch the wit,
Catch the spirit, catch the spit.

The world is, the world is,
Love and life are deep,
Maybe as his skies are wide.

Exit the warrior,
Today’s Tom Sawyer,
He gets high on you,
And the energy you trade,
He gets right on to the friction of the day.

Lyrics

Hey, don’t write yourself off yet
It’s only in your head you feel left out
And looked down on
Just try your best
Try everything you can
And don’t you worry what they tell themselves
When you’re away

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

Hey, you know they’re all the same
You know you’re doing better on your own
So don’t buy in
Live right now and
Just be yourself
It doesn’t matter if it’s good enough
For someone else

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

Hey, don’t write yourself off yet
It’s only in your head you feel left out
And looked down on
Just do your best
Do everything you can
And don’t you worry what their bitter hearts
Are gonna say

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright, alright

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be alright

Lyrics

Yours is the only version of my desertion that I could ever subscribe to
That is all that I can do
You are a past sinner the last winner I’m raping all around me
Until the last drop is behind you

But you’re so cute when you’re frustrated, dear
Yeah you’re so cute when you’re sedated, dear
I’m resting

Sleep tight, dream right, we have two hundred couches where you can
Sleep tight, dream right, we have two hundred couches where you can
Sleep tight, dream right, we have two hundred couches where you can
Sleep tonight, sleep tonight, sleep tonight, sleep tonight

You are the only person who’s completely certain there’s nothing here to be into
That is all that you can do
You are a past sinner, the last winner and everything we’ve come to
Makes you you
But you cannot safely say while I will be away you will not consider sadly
How you helped me to stray
You will not reach me I am resenting a position that is past resentment now I can consider now there is this distance so

Sleep tight, grim right, we have two hundred couches where you can
Sleep tight, grim right, we have two hundred couches where you can
Sleep tight, grim right, we have two hundred couches where you can
Sleep tonight, sleep tonight, sleep tonight, sleep tonight

Something to say
Something to do
Nothing to say
When there’s nothing to do

Lyrics

Early one mornin’ the sun was shinin’,
I was layin’ in bed
Wond’rin’ if she’d changed at all
If her hair was still red.
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama’s homemade dress
Papa’s banquet wasn’t big enough.
And I was standin’ on the side of the road
Rain fallin’ on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I’ve paid some dues gettin’ through,
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess,
But I used a little too much force.
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best.
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin’ away
I heard her say over my shoulder,
“We’ll meet again someday on the avenue,”
Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell.
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin’ for a while on a fishin’ boat
Right outside of Delacroix.
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind,
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was workin’ in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer,
I just kept lookin’ at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear.
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I’s just about to do the same,
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, “Don’t I know your name?”
I muttered somethin’ underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
“I thought you’d never say hello,” she said
“You look like the silent type.”
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century.
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you,
Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs,
There was music in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air.
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died.
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside.
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn,
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew,
Tangled up in blue.

So now I’m goin’ back again,
I got to get to her somehow.
All the people we used to know
They’re an illusion to me now.
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter’s wives.
Don’t know how it all got started,
I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their lives.
But me, I’m still on the road
Headin’ for another joint
We always did feel the same,
We just saw it from a different point of view,
Tangled up in blue.

One way, or another, I’m gonna find ya
I’m gonna get ya get ya get ya get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna win ya
I’m gonna get ya get ya get ya get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna see ya
I’m gonna meet ya meet ya meet ya meet ya
One day, maybe next week
I’m gonna meet ya, I’m gonna meet ya, I’ll meet ya

I will drive past your house
And if the lights are all down
I’ll see who’s around

One way, or another, I’m gonna find ya
I’m gonna get ya get ya get ya get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna win ya
I’ll get ya! I’ll get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna see ya
I’m gonna meet ya meet ya meet ya meet ya
One day, maybe next week, I’m gonna meet ya
I’ll meet ya! Ahhh

And if the lights are all out
I’ll follow your bus downtown
See who’s hangin’ ’round

One way, or another, I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna give you the slip
A slip of the hip for another
I’m gonna lose ya, I’m gonna trick ya
I’ll trick ya

One way, or another, I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna trick ya trick ya trick ya trick ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna give you the slip

I walked down the hall
Stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all
Find out who ya call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
See specials on rack
Then get lost in the crowd

One way, or another, I’m gonna get ya
I’ll get ya, I’ll get ya get ya get ya get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna get ya
I’ll get ya, I’ll get ya get ya get ya get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna get ya
I’ll get ya, I’ll get ya get ya get ya get ya
One way, or another, I’m gonna get ya
I’ll get ya, I’ll get ya get ya get ya get ya

Lyrics

Now she brags about her law degree
We used to chat about the lottery
Don’t you know she used to present those novelty checks?
And we can’t talk about her history
She won’t shut up about her ministry
She’s so demure, so insecure so

Mums the word about philosophy
She sits in bed with a dictionary
Unprepared for the judiciary
She’s not a product of the monastery
She’s covered in flaws
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was

It’s a northern Texas fantasy
A fighting chance to join the monarchy
As a girl she used to lament
The lack of girls in government
She’s so demure so insecure
But she’s covered in flaws

She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was

Mums the word about philosophy
She sits in bed with a dictionary
Unprepared for the judiciary
She’s not a product of the monastery
And now I find out she’s in love with me
She wants to know me better personally
She won’t shut up about her ministry
We used to chat about the lottery
She’s covered in flaws
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme girl that I thought she was
She’s not the supreme, she’s not the supreme girl
She’s not the supreme, she’s not the supreme girl

Lyrics

Johnny was a school boy when he heard his first beatle song
Love me do i think it was. From there it didnt take him long
Got himself a guitar used to play it every night
Now he’s in a rockn roll outfit and every things all right
Dont ya know

Johnny told his mama mama i’m goin away
I’m gonna hit the big time gonna be a big star some today
Mama came to the door with a teardrop in her eyes
Johnny said dont cry mama smile and wave goodbye
Dont ya know

Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
And all the world will love you just as long as long as you are

Johnny made a record went straight up to number one
Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing his song
Watching the world go by, surprised it goes so fast.
Johnny looked around and said well i made the big time at last

Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
And all the world will love you just as long as long as you are

Johnny died one night, died in his bed
Bottle of whiskey sleeping tablets by his head
Johnny’s life passed him by like a warm summer’s day
If you listen to the wind you cand hear him play
Don’t you know, don’t you know

Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
Dont ya know
Dont ya know that you are a shooting star
And all the world will love you just as long as long as you are

Sitting on a park bench
Eyeing little girls with bad intent
Snot running down his nose
Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes
Hey, Aqualung!
Drying in the cold sun
Watching as the frilly panties run
Hey Aqualung!
Feeling like a dead duck
Spitting out pieces of his broken luck
Whoa, Aqualung!

Sun streaking cold
An old man wandering lonely
Taking time
The only way he knows
Neck hurting bad
As he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog
And warms his feet

Feeling alone
The army’s up the road
Salvation à la mode and
A cup of tea
Aqualung my friend
Don’t you start away uneasy
You poor old sod, you see, it’s only me

Do you still remember
December’s foggy freeze
When the ice that
Clings onto your beard was
Screaming agony
And you snatch your rattling last breaths
With deep-sea-diver sounds
And the flowers bloom like
Madness in the spring

Sun streaking cold
An old man wandering lonely
Taking time
The only way he knows
Neck hurting bad
As he bends to pick a dog-end
He goes down to the bog
And warms his feet

Feeling alone
The army’s up the road
Salvation à la mode and
